Privacy notice
In effect from 15 October 2026. See also our Terms.
This notice explains how Warren Kaplan handles your personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Contact: warren@kaplan.co.za.
What we collect
- If you report a pothole: your photo (including the location your phone stores in it), the address, the size details, your name, and your mobile number and/or email.
- If you pledge: your name, the amount, your mobile number and/or email, and any message you write.
- If you pay: the amount, the date and an email for the receipt. Card details go straight to Paystack. We never see or store them.
Why
To price the repair, book it, take payment, tell you how it is going and keep the financial records the law requires. We do not sell your information or use it for advertising.
What is public
Anyone with a pothole’s link can see its photo, street address, size, the amount pledged, and pledgers’ names and messages (unless they ticked “don’t show my name”). The reporter’s first name appears only if they chose that. Phone numbers and email addresses are never shown.
Who else sees it
- The repair contractor sees the photo, address and size. They do not see your contact details.
- Service providers who run the site for us: Supabase (database and photo storage), Vercel (hosting), Resend (email), Paystack (payments) and OpenStreetMap (turning a location into a street name). Some of them store data outside South Africa, under their own data protection terms.
Cookies
No tracking or advertising cookies. The only cookie is the one that keeps a contractor signed in.
How long we keep it
For as long as the job is open, and after that only as long as tax and accounting law requires for payment records.
Your rights
You can ask to see what we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted (apart from records we must keep by law). Email warren@kaplan.co.za. If you are unhappy with how we handled it, you can complain to the Information Regulator at inforegulator.org.za.
